Sequence of Tones in alternative questions

Alternative questions usually form two intonation groups. The Low Rise is used in the first intonation group and the Low Fall is used in the second one because it is final.

e.g. 'Is she / twenty |or 'twenty \one?

If there is a choice of three or more alternatives, the rules are the same.

e.g. 'Would you 'like / tea, | / coffee | or \ juice?

In fast colloquial speech alternative questions may be reduced to one intonation group.

e.g. 'Has he ' read 'two or \three books?

Practical material

1. Read the following alternative questions, paying attention to the combination of tones:

1. 'Is she an /artist | or an \actress?

2. 'Are their 'parties /ghastly | or \marvelous?

3. 'Did she 'marry /Alfred | or \Harry?

4. 'Is it /cheap | or ex\pensive?

6. 'Will we 'meet on the /beach, | in the /park, | or at the \café?

7. 'Do you pre'fer /veal, | or /beef, | or \chicken?

And now practice longer utterances:

1. 'Do you 'think she’s / better, doctor, | or 'must she 'go to \hospital?

2. 'Was it a / matinee |or \evening performance?

3. 'Is your 'new 'dress / red |or \blue?

10. Is 'that the / last one |or is there a'nother 'layer under\neath?

The scheme of the phonetic analysis

  1. Transcribe the sentence.

  2. Give the tonogram of the sentence.

  3. State the communicative type of the sentence and tell about its structure ( the presence of parentheses, author’s words, adverbials etc.)

  4. State the number of intonation groups in a sentence, the use of a certain Nuclear Tone in them. Prove everything using the rules.

  5. Find different phonetic phenomena concerning consonants. (aspiration, loss of aspiration, types of plosion, etc.)

  6. Name all cases of vowel reduction in the form words. Write their dictionary form.

e.g. In 'front of the /house| there is a 'little \orchard.

1. From the point of view of communication it is a statement with an adverbial phrase at the beginning.

2. There are two intonation groups in this sentence as an adverbial phrase in this position usually forms a separate intonation group. The 1st intonation group is pronounced with the Low Rise according to the rule that reads that adverbial phrase at the beginning of sentences are usually pronounced with the LR or Mid Level Tones. The 2nd intonation group is pronounced with the Low Fall to show the completeness.

3. As for the cases of assimilation, I’d mention:

- lateral plosion in the word “little”.

- historical assimilation in the word “orchard”.

4. As for vowel reduction there are several cases of reduced forms

such as:

of [Ov] [qv] – qualitative reduction

the [DJ] [Dq] – qualitative reduction

there [Deq] [ Dq] – the same

a [ei] [q] – the same
