High rise

The High Rise(HR) starts in the middle of the voice range and rises to a very high pitch.

The HR is essentially an interrogative tone expressing the speaker’s active search for information. It is used in the following cases:

1. in light and casual general questions

e.g. Can I /help you?

2. in elliptical general questions

e.g. /Like it? (instead of 'Do you / like it?)

The HR is used in special questions with the nuclear tone on the interrogative word.

The HR here calls for a repetition of the information already given.

e.g. /What’s his name?

3. The HR is mostly used in echoed utterances of all communicative types:

a) in echoed statements which turn into questions often addressed by the speaker

to himself before he reacts to the interlocutor’s utterance.

e.g. We 'start to\morrow. – You 'start to /morrow?

b) in echoed special questions asked by the listener when he wants to make sure

he understood the question in a right way, so he shifts the nucleus to the part where there

is some doubt.

e.g. 'How \old are you? – ' How 'old am /I?

c) in general and special questions which the listener asks in order to think over the answer.

e.g. 'Have you pre 'pared your re /port? – 'Have I pre'pared my re /port?

The HR is also used in non-final sense groups, in echoed commands, exclamations and interjections to express some doubt, disbelieving.

e.g. I re\fuse to apologise. – In that /case…

Be \nice to them. – Be /nice to them. (Why \should I?)

\Excellent! – /Excellent! (What so\ excellent about it?)
