4. Read the following sentences, paying attention to the number of syllables in each group in bold type and changing the rate of speech accordingly.

Remember! The tendency to distribute stressed syllables evenly is characteristic of English speech. In ordinary speech the number of unstressed syllables between each pair of stressed varies considerably. It is important to keep the beat of the stresses going regularly, no matter how many intervening unstressed syllables there are. When two or three stresses come close together the speed of utterance is noticeably slower, when they are separated by several unstressed syllables these syllables flow more rapidly.
