20. Read the following sentences paying attention to the unstressed as…as:

1. He could not lie as quietly as I could. 2. Jim was not as surprised as he sounded. 3. She was as pale as a sheet 4. The old man had told his son to let him know as soon as the post arrived. 5. They were as happy as a pair of small boys. 6. His silence was as sultry as the day before a storm. 7. He was as welcome among them as at the other place. 8. The sea was as smooth as a mill-pond. 9. They could live on the farm as long as they wished. 10. How many sandwiches shall I make? Make as many as you think we’ll eat. 11. He is as cool as a cucumber.

21. Care should be taken not to put a stress on as…as:

As fit as a fiddle. As clear as day.

As pale as a ghost. As busy as a bee.

As old as a hills. As black as a crow

As slippery as an eel. As bold as brass.

As snug as a bug in a rug. As gay as a grig.

22. Russian learners are apt to misplace the stress in the combinations given below. Read the following sentences and stress the first word in so on, so forth, leaving …or so, … or two, … or something, each other, one another and one unstressed or weakly stressed:

1. He dis'liked /dances ,| /plays,| /picnics| and so on.

2. I shall re'turn in a \week or so.

3.You’d 'better 'put on \rain-coats or something.

4. We can 'sit 'down on a 'bench /here| for 'ten \minutes or so.

5. You’ll be 'well again in a \day or two.

6. I 'can’t re 'member what we \said to each other.

7. They 'all 'seem to \like one another.

8. In 'front of the /house| we have a 'small \garden| in 'which we 'grow /roses,| /tulips,| and \so on.

9. 'Show me the /green one,| please.

10. You’ve 'got a \house| and 'not a very \bad one.

23. Read the following sentences, paying attention to prepositions preceded by the verb “to be”. They are usually stressed when there is no stressed word before them.

They’re 'by the \window. But: They’re 'coming by \air

Is it 'near the /post-office? They 'live near the \school.

It was 'on the \side-board. Did you 'put it on this /table?

We were 'round the \corner. We’ve 'live round the \corner.

She is 'with his \sister. She’s 'working with her \sister.
