Use of English

Complex sentences.

A complex sentence contains one independent clause and one (or more) dependent clauses.

There are three kinds of dependent clauses: adverb, adjective and noun.

A dependent adverb clause begins with an adverbial subordinator such as when, because, while, if, although, so that, etc. e.g.: The students are studying because they have a test tomorrow.

A dependent adjective clause begins with a relative pronoun such as who, whom, which, whose or that, or with the relative adverb such as where and when e.g.: The woman who called my mom sells cosmetics.

A dependent noun clause functions as a noun and begins with wh-question word, that, whether, or if. e.g.: What Garry did shocked his friends.

Put in the necessary punctuation.

e.g.: I finished watching the film, and then I went to bed.

    1. The field was covered with grass it was a beautiful sight.

2. I have read Soul on Ice but I have not read The Invisible Man.

  1. I had to complete the assignment by Saturday otherwise; I would have failed the course.

  1. George went to the cinema quite often the guard even knew his name.

  2. The artist preferred to paint in oils he did not like watercolors.

Put the words in the correct order.

Use of English

A complex-compound sentences.

A compound-complex sentence is a combination of two (or more) independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. e.g.: I would have purchased the cheese that you like, but it was too expensive.

Identify the independent and subordinate clauses in the following sentences and determine whether they are complex or compound-complex.

e.g.: If you hurry, we might get to school on time. (complex)

  1. Although Monica had a cold, she went to school because she had a test.

  2. While washing the car, Todd slipped on the soap and he fell.

  3. Dad takes the train to work even though he has a car.

  4. Molly baked brownies since she had nothing else to do.

  5. Frank had a good sense of humor, so he laughed a lot.

Writing

Look at the family tree and write ten sentences about your family.

Write about members of your family. Describe how you picture and feel about them. Here are some questions you might ask yourself:

  • What does this person look like?

  • What work does he or she do?

  • What are his or her interests?

  • What do you admire about this person?

  • What have you learned from him or her?

  • What is your favorite activity with this family member?

CPC. Translate the sentences from Russian into English.

e.g.: У него есть деньги? Да. Has he got any money? Yes, he has.

e.g.: У него нет (никаких) друзей. He has no friends.

    1. У тебя в контрольной работе нет (никаких) ошибок.

    2. У нас нет свободного времени.

    3. У неё светлые волосы? Да у нее светлые волосы.

    4. У него есть три книги Агаты Кристи.

    5. У тебя есть собака. Нет, у меня кошка.

e.g.: Не хотите ли вы молока? Нет, я не хочу молока. Would you like some milk? No, I don’t. I don’t want any milk.

  1. Земля – круглая.

  2. Обычно, я завтракаю в семь часов.

  3. Ты любишь петь? Нет, а ты?

  4. Я не люблю черный кофе.

  5. Я часто хожу в парк.

  6. Каждые выходные они играют в теннис.

  7. Джейн изучает французский.

  8. Самолет взлетает в 17:30.

  9. В Сирии разбился самолет.

  10. Сюда идёт невеста!
