British children top league for unhealthy living

By Sam Lister

Health Correspondent

1. BRITISH schoolchildren live on sugary snacks, eating almost no fruit or vegetables, and drinking large amounts of alcohol, the largest study of youth health has revealed.

2. Doctors recommend at least five portions daily for a healthy diet. In England 25 per cent of boys and 30 per cent of girls aged 11 ate a single helping each day, less than half the rate in countries such as Belgium. Even fewer consumed a single item of fruit a day.

Consumption of soft drinks revealed a markedly different trend.

3. The authors of the study said that their findings reflected Britain’s embedded culture of snacking and poor nutrition among schoolchildren.

“If around 30 per cent of children are eating just one helping of fruit or veg daily, then it means two thirds are not eating any at all,” Dr. Currie said. “That is nowhere near the targets for a healthy diet.

4. The World Health Organisation report, based on surveys of more than 160, 000 children in 35 countries, found that the dietary habits of Britain’s young were among the worst.

More than two thirds of children aged between 11 and 15 admitted that they didn’t eat even a single portion of vegetables a day.

5. Almost half of Scottish 11-year-olds, and more than a third in England, said that they drank at least one sugary drink a day. A similar number admitted eating sweets or chocolates every day, while almost a third said that they did not have breakfast regularly.

Among the most alarming findings was the levels of alcohol drunk by British schoolchildren, particularly girls, according to Candace Currie, the director of the Child and Adolescent Health Research Unit at the University of Edinburgh.

6. The findings follow the publication of a scathing report by the Commons Health Select Committee last week, which gave warning of a society in which thousands of people risk losing their limbs and sight from fat-related illnesses.

Poor diet, increasingly sedentary lifestyles and lack of government action have been blamed for a 400 per cent rise in levels of obesity over 25 years. Three quarters of British adults are now overweight.

7. Of the 35 countries, England and Wales both came in the top three for the percentage of 11, 13 and 15 year-olds drinking at least one alcoholic drink a week.

8. “Not eating breakfast, lots of sweets, drinking fizzy drinks – if you look at it as a package, the overall profile is not conducive to good health.”
