25. Globalization and National Identity

Globalization can be described as a process by which people of all over the world are unified into a single society and function together. This process has some contributors: free movement of capital, which is the fuel of investments, trade liberalization, lowering of shipping costs (thanks to containerization), reduction in telecommunication and computing costs and etc. There are some positive points of globalization for example it increases the power of government and competition among companies. But globalization has disadvantages such as employment problems in the West, cause factories are built not in own countries, companies looking forward to low-wages stuff. Cross-cultural issues and misunderstanding are potential problems in subsidiaries of global companies. When company globalises, it should choose the best method to enter foreign market, it may be local partner (a person or a company who helps foreign comp. to enter the market), acquisition (buying or taking over another company), franchising (giving someone the exclusive right to sell products) and etc.

Boeing is a world-known company, its head office and main factories are in Seattle. Chairman wants to turn Boeing into a global company, but employees are against it, because they seem that not only foreign country, but other state is exotic. A general aim of the Boeing is to become a global rather than a US company and try to enter an aerospace market. The chairman of the company isn’t afraid of losing national image, he believes that world is moving towards era of global market and global companies.

Gazprom is a global energy company basically focused on geological exploration , production , transportation , storage , processing and marketing of gas. Company’s mission is to provide efficient gas supply to Russian consumers and negotiate long-term gas export contracts. Gazprom's strategic goal is to take the leading position among global energy companies by entering new markets and ensuring reliable supplies. The company has 165 distribution subsidiaries all over the Eurasian continent. Gazprom wants to increase the security of gas supplies to European consumers by creating new gas transmission projects – Nord Stream and South Stream.
