Text 5 Production Management
Production management involves the series of activities needed to run a company. Production management involves coordinating the activities of selecting, designing, operating, controlling and updating the company's productive system.
A productive system is the combination of the activities that interact to enable the company to reach its goals. In an effective productive system all activities should work together, all activities are coordinated toward accomplishing the same goals, the system is well regulated and operates smoothly, and the system includes all activities necessary to accomplish the company's goals.
Each company's productive system is a combination of input, transformation, and output activities. Inputs are any resources needed to do the work. Transformation involves changing inputs into the company's final product. Outputs are the final products of the company's productive system.
Production planning includes deciding what product to make, as well as how and where to make it. The product is used by a company to reach its goals by providing something of value to its customers.
Every company must answer three production-related questions: How shall we make the product? Can we make the number of products we want? Can we manufacture the product at a satisfactory cost?
