Text 3 Managerial Skills
A manager needs four types of skills: technical, human relations, conceptual, and political.
All four managerial skills are important. But their usefulness may vary by managerial level. Technical skills tend to be used most at lower levels of organization. Conceptual skills are used more by managers with greater authority and responsibility, because they must see "the big picture". Human relations skills are needed throughout the organization, at every managerial level. But first-line managers may need them most, because of the heavy leadership demands of supervisory positions. Middle managers, on the other hand, often need the most political skill, because they often want to rise to top-level management. At the supervisory level, political skill is aimed mostly at winning favour. At the top, political tactics are focused on getting and holding power. Middle managers use political skills for both reasons – to win favour and to acquire and retain power. Experience on the job plus formal management training helps create effective managers.
