Text 1 Management and Managers
Management is the process of making plans to achieve the goals of an organization and directing people to carry out those plans.
Business managers are the people who manage time, resources, and activities so as to achieve a company's goals. A manager must act as the person-in-charge, the chief decision maker, a formal channel of communication, mediator, politician, and the official company representative.
Managers are classified either by their level within an organization or by what they do.
First-line managers – supervisors or foremen – are responsible for supervising the routine work of employees and making decisions relating to that work.
Middle managers – department heads, project managers, directors – supervise first-line managers, coordinate activities, plan to achieve company goals, and make budgetary, sales and inventory decisions.
The company's top managers – chief executive officer, the president, vice presidents – are responsible for overall management, setting the organization's goals and policies, and planning and directing all aspects of growth and expansion.
The various levels of management are linked in a chain of command, forming the organizational structure.
A functional manager is in charge of a single function of a company, whereas a general manager is in charge of many functions.
