Text 1 Sole Proprietorships
When you start a business, you have many decisions to make. The first is the form organization best suited to the needs of your business. There are three major forms of business ownership. They are sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations. Most businesses start as sole proprietorships.
A sole proprietorship is a business run by one individual for his or her own benefit. The ease with which proprietorships can be established, and the fact that the owner has total control, explains the fact that proprietorships account for more than 75 percent of all businesses.
The proprietor has personal liability, or, responsibility, for all debts and obligations of the business. The income of the proprietorship is taxed at the favourable personal income rate. A proprietor who employs others acts as the principal – with the right to direct, but also the responsibility for, their business actions.
The limited knowledge and skills of the owner are usually the greatest disadvantage of the proprietorship. Because of the disadvantages connected with proprietorships, most proprietorships start out small and remain so.
