Text 2 Hotel and Motel Manager
A. Many students in business schools choose management as their major. Management principles and practices are used in any kind of organization, regardless of the product or process.
Hotel or motel management is a sophisticated field. Managers must understand computers, finance, and labour relations. They also need to know the seven other areas that make up the backbone of the operation: rooms, food and beverage, personnel, sales and marketing, hotel accounting, conventions, and catering. The emphasis in hotel and motel management has evolved from technical skills to management skills.
The best way to advance is through the management training program of a major hotel chain. Prospective managers have from six to fifteen months of intensive training, rotating through all the major departments.
Places of employment: throughout the country and abroad, with most jobs in medium-size to large cities.
Skills required: a two-year degree for some jobs, but the quickest route into management is a four-year degree. A second language is mandatory for employment overseas, and it helps in some U.S. metropolitan areas.
Salaries: $16,000 – $25,000 for trainees; $33,000 – $40,000 for assistant managers; $53,000 – $80,000 for general managers in major cities.
B. My name‘s Tom Chappell, and I’m an assistant manager at the Hotel Ambassador in London. There are two assistant managers, and one of us is always on duty at busy times. The general manager has overall responsibility, and we report directly to her. We are responsible for the day-to-day running of the hotel. We plan the work schedules, manage the accounts, and deal with any problem to do with staff or guests.
We have a staff of about 100 people. Basically, there are four departments, each with its own manager. Firstly, there’s front of house – that’s receptionists, the people who deal with our guests on a daily basis. The reception team usually consists of a supervisor and two or three receptionists, depending on the time of day. They report to the front of house manager, who is also in charge of the porters and doormen.
Then there’s housekeeping – all the services to do with the rooms. The head housekeeper is in charge of this. She has a team of maids who make up the rooms, provide towels and bed linen. She also looks after laundry and cleaning in other parts of the hotel.
The banqueting and conference manager organizes all the events that take place in the hotel. He has a team of event organizers who look after groups and parties. And finally, there’s the food and beverage manager.
