What are Electrons?

Electrons are the tiniest invisible particles having a negative electric charge. As small as atoms are, electrons are very much smaller, but they go around and around inside atoms, and there is much space left. There are more electrons in a large drop of water than there are drops of water in the Atlantic Ocean, so you can imagine how tiny they are. All atoms contain electrons – and everything, everywhere, is made of atoms.

An electric current is a flow of electrons going from one place to another, just as the current in a stream is the flow of water going from one place to another. The fastest the water in a stream flows, the stronger the current of the stream. It is the same with an electric current: the fastest the flow of electrons, the stronger the current.

1. Electrons have a negative charge.

2. An atom is smaller than an electron.

3. All electrons contain atoms.
