Правописание прилагательных при добавлении суффиксов

1. Если прилагательное оканчивается на немую букву -e, то прибавляется только –r, -st:

late – later – (the) latest, fine – finer – (the) finest.

2. Если односложное прилагательное оканчивается на согласную, а перед ней стоит краткая ударная гласная, то конечная согласная удваивается:

hot – hotter – (the) hottest, big – bigger – (the) biggest.

3. Если прилагательное оканчивается на букву -y, а перед ней стоит согласная, то буква y меняется на i, например:

heavy – heavier – (the) heaviest, easy – easier – (the) easiest.

4. Если прилагательное оканчивается на букву -y, а перед ней стоит гласная, то конечная –y не меняется:

gay – gayer – (the) gayest.

Сравнительные конструкции

than – чем

He speaks English better than I do. – Он говорит по-английски лучше, чем я.

as … as – такой … как

This result is as good as that one. – Этот результат такой же хороший, как и тот.

not so … as – не такой … как

This result is not so good as that one. – Этот результат не такой хороший, как тот.

the … the – чем … тем

The sooner we decide on this question the better. – Чем скорее мы решим этот вопрос, тем лучше.
