2.8 Fashion after 1990s

Now there are many different styles. Films are important as influences on fashion and trends for fashion, make up, hairstyles and jewellery. A recent example of this is the influence of the Nicole Kidman film Moulin Rouge and the lace Edwardian clothing that has been copied for the high street [11].

3. London is a leading centre of a fashion in Britain

3.1 Fashion houses in London

The majority of British fashion houses are based in the capital, London. British fashion houses are associated with a very traditional, British style: elegant, yet conservative cuts, fine yet not overly extravagant materials and a sort of noble, even 'imperial' elegance, such as that of traditional 'Fifties debutantes' gowns, compared to the French 'chic'. The first fashion designer, Charles Worth, was a native of Britain, although he made his name in Paris in the 19th century. British Designers include Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Stella McCartney, Matthew Williamson, and Christopher Kane.e, the majority of British fashion houses are based in the capital, London. 3.1.1 Name of a fashion house

The name of a fashion house can mean many things. What's in a name?

A fashion designer is involved in fashion that bears the designer's name in a number of ways.

The first is direct involvement in designing and producing the finest made to measure garments for individuals.

The second is closely supervising trusted assistants in the design and production of the finest made to measure garments. These assistants can form fashion houses in their own right [2, p.38].

The third is designing ready to wear ranges of clothes where approved compromises are made on hand finishing, choice of fabrics and production.

The fourth is allowing the name to be used in approved ready to wear ranges designed and produced by others.

The fifth is allowing the name to be used without any control over any of the artistic, design or production elements.

3.1.2 Fashion house of Alexander McQueen

McQueen left Rokeby School at 16, landing himself an apprenticeship with Savile Row tailors Anderson & Sheppard, then working for Gieves & Hawkes and the famous theatrical costumiers Angels and Bermans. Whilst on Savile Row, McQueen's clients included Mikhail Gorbachev and Charles, Prince of Wales. At the age of 20, he spent a period of time working for Koji Tatsuno before traveling to Milan, Italy and working for Romeo Gigli [12].

McQueen returned to London in 1994 and applied to London's most prestigious fashion school, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design to work as a pattern cutter tutor. Due to the strength of his portfolio he was persuaded by the Head of the Masters course to enroll on the course as a student. He received his Masters degree in Fashion design and famously, his graduation collection was bought in its entirety by influential fashion stylist Isabella Blow, who was said to have persuaded McQueen to change his name from Lee to Alexander (his middle name) when he subsequently launched his fashion career.

Icelandic singer Björk is a huge fan of McQueen's work.

Alexander McQueen by the end of 2007 had boutiques in New York, London, Los Angeles, Milan, and Las Vegas. Japanese pop superstar Ayumi Hamasaki is one of the many celebrities like Naoumi Tripaati that often wears Alexander McQueen, often seen in her "making of" videos and back-stage clips.
