1. The Parts of Speech Classification.
The words of language are divided into lexico-grammatical classes /types, sets, series/ of words, which are traditionally called "parts of speech". In modern linguistics, parts of speech are discriminated on the basis of the following criteria:
the lexico-grammatical meaning /the "categorial meaning of the part of speech", i.e. the meaning common to all the words of the given class/;
stem-building elements;
the morphological categories;
combinability /i.e. the ability to combine with other words/;
the syntactical function in the sentence.
