Пособие может быть использовано в качестве основного материала по указанной теме и направлено на усвоение и активизацию лексики по юридической тематике. Кроме того, целью сборника является ознакомление студентов с правовой и судебной системой стран изучаемого языка в ее историческом развитии.

Сборник содержит 5 разделов:

  • правовая система англоязычных стран;

  • виды преступлений;

  • судебная система;

  • виды наказаний;

  • упражнения на закрепление изученного материала.

В сборник включены оригинальные информативные тексты по данным темам, которым предшествуют глоссарии. Пособие также содержит разнообразные задания как то: перевод с английского языка на русский и с русского на английский, дефиниции, ответы на вопросы, проблемные дискуссии, заполнение пробелов и т.д.

Unit 1. The Language of Law

I. Memorize the following words and phrases and give their Russian equivalents.

Law – 1. System of rules that citizens of a country or place must obey; 2. the law – the police;

against the law = illegal

to break a law (to contravene a law) – to do sth illegal; law-breaker

to bend a law – to break the law in a way which is considered not to be harmful

law-abiding – (citizens, people, etc.) those who respect and obey the law

lawful – considered by the government or law courts to be legal and correct; allowed by law

lawless - not obeying the law or not controlled by the law

to become law – to be officially made a law; law-maker – any elected official responsible for making laws

by law = according to the law

within the law – (keep, stay, remain, operate) make sure that what you do is legal

law enforcement – the job of making sure that the law is obeyed

law firm – a company that provides legal services

lawyer – someone whose job is to advise people about laws, write formal agreements, or represent people in court. In BrE a lawyer who speaks in court is called a barrister, while a solicitor works mainly from an office, but may also appear in the less formal courts. In AmE a lawyer is often called a councellor (counselor) or, especially if he or she speaks in court, an attorney. Mind that the word advocate is rare in this meaning and used mostly in Scotland; its first meaning is someone who publicly supports a particular way of doing things.

legal – 1. allowed, ordered, or approved by law; 2. (only before noun) concerned with or connected with the law. Opposite: illegal

to take legal action – to use the legal system to settle an argument

legal system – the laws and the way they work in a particular country

to legalise – to make a law that allows people to do sth that was not allowed before; n legalization

legislation – 1. a law or set of laws; 2. the act of making laws; v to legislate (against/ for/ on) adj legislative

legitimate – 1. allowable, or operating according to the law; 2.legitimate children are born to parents who are legally married to each other

juridical formal connected with judges or the law

jurisdiction – the right to use an official power to make legal decisions

jurisprudence – the science or study of law
