Have something done

Русские предложения типа Он починил свои ботинки, Он покрасил стены своей комнаты и т.п. могут иметь два значения. Они могут означать: 1) что действие совершается самим подлежащим или 2) что кто-то производит действие для него, за него. В английском языке этим двум значениям соответствуют различные предложения:

He mended his shoes.

He had his shoes mended.

He painted the walls of his room.

He had the walls of his room painted

Он починил (сам) свои ботинки.

Он починил (отдал в починку) свои ботинки.

Он покрасил (сам) стены своей комнаты.

Он покрасил стены своей комнаты.

(ему покрасили)

Ex. 309. State the difference between the sentences and translate them into Russian.

1. I want to have my dress made.

I want to make a dress.

2. He brought his things to the station.

He had his things brought to the station.

3. You must tidy the room.

You must have the room tidied.

4. I want to paper the walls.

I want to have the walls papered.

5. Tom wanted to whitewash the fence.

Tom wanted to have the fence whitewashed.

6. I want to have the dishes washed and dried.

I want to wash and dry the dishes.

7. The boy has repaired his shoes.

The boy has had his shoes repaired.

8. She wants to polish her shoed.

She wants to have her shoes polished.

Ex. 310. Answer the following questions.

1. Do you iron your dresses or do you have them ironed?

2. Have you ever had your teeth filled in?

3. Where did you have them filled in?

4. When did you have them filled in?

5. How often do you have your teeth examined?

6. Do you wash your clothes or do you have them washed?

1. When did John have his appendix removed? – He had his appendix removed 3 days ago.

2. to have their photos taken (a week ago)

4. to have her bag stolen (4 days ago)

5. to have the house broken into by the thieves (yesterday)

6. to have his medicine prepared (2 hours ago)

7. to have the matter seen to (2 weeks ago)

8. to have the car repaired (a fortnight ago)

9. to have the grass cut (last week)

10. to have his eyes tested (2 months ago)

Ex. 312. Translate the following sentences into English.
