memory

mumerical

complex

control

instruction

home

history

desktop

-er, -or: “пристрій для виконання дії, позначеної основою”; “особа (програма), що виконує дію, позначену основою” (process “обробляти інформацію”  processor), printer, operator, driver, explorer, speaker, provider тощо);

-ion, -ation, -age, -ing: “процес, форма, спосіб, результат дії, позначеної основою” (recognize “розпізнавати”  recognition; locate “розміщувати”  location; store “вводити, запам’ятовувати інформацію”  storage; edit “редагувати”  editing);

-able: “можливість виконання дії, позначеної основою” (identify “розпізнавати”  identifiable);

de-, un-: “заперечення дії, позначеної основою” (compress “архівувати”  decompress; use  unusable);

re-: “повтор дії, позначеної основою” (run “задіяти”  re-run; try “спробувати”  retry);

Search engine

A search engine is a program on the world wide web of the Internet that helps us to quickly and easily find the web pages we want.

We can put in words on the subject that we are interested in, and the search engine will find pages with those words.

Some examples of search engines are: Google, AltaVista, Dogpile, Yahoo, Globepage (international), META (Ukraine), Rambler, Яндекс (Russia)

(http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine)

Google (http://www.google.com) is a very large and popular search engine on the World Wide Web of the Internet. They do a lot of other stuff too.

Yahoo! is a website which is known for its search engine (finds web pages on the Internet.) It also gives many services including email, games, chat, and other services.

Try a Search Engine

Here are some top tips for Internet searching.

  • Don't choose the wrong search tool for the job. Make sure that you are using the most appropriate search tool for your purposes.

  • Don't use vague keywords. Try typing "weather" into a search engine and you will probably find millions of Web sites. Combine "weather" with "Greece" and you're likely to retrieve better results.

  • Don't misspell keywords. Don't expect to find the information you need if you search for things like "adress", "tecnical" or "comittee" (although you might get lucky!).

  • Don't overlook alternative spellings. On the other hand, ask yourself if the keyword could be spelt differently. For example, if you want to find out about Pearl Harbor make sure you use the American spelling (Harbor, rather than Harbour).

  • Don't ignore the help. Almost all search tools offer an online help. Make sure you use it!

  • Don't get lost. It's easy to hop from one Web site to another whenever something looks interesting. Don't get distracted! Use the Back button on the top toolbar to navigate back to pages you have recently visited. Even better, make a note of Web sites that look interesting and visit them later.

  • Don't be afraid to experiment. It may be that you won't find what you are looking for on the Internet immediately. Try out different keywords, new combinations of words and different search tools to find the information you need.

  • Don't expect miracles. The Internet seems to offer so much, but is it really the right place for you to be looking? Think whether it might be easier to turn your computer off and look for information elsewhere.

Introducing the Internet Explorer Web browser

With an Internet connection and Internet Explorer, you can find and view information about anything on the Web.

Internet Explorer makes it easier to get the most from the World Wide Web, whether you are searching for new information or browsing your favorite Web sites.

The easiest way to get around the Web

  • Start typing a frequently used Web address in the Address bar, and a list of similar addresses appears that you can choose from. If a Web address is wrong, Internet Explorer can search for similar addresses to try to find a match.

  • Search for Web sites by clicking the Search button on the toolbar. Then in the Search bar, type a word or phrase that describes what you're looking for. When your search results appear, you can view the individual Web pages without losing your list of search results.

  • You can also search directly from the Address bar. Just type common names or words, and Internet Explorer can automatically take you to the site that most likely matches what you are searching for, and list other likely sites as well.

  • Go to other Web pages similar to the one you are viewing, without even doing a search. Just use the Show Related Links feature.

  • Browse through a list of Web pages you recently visited by clicking the History button on the toolbar. In addition you can rearrange or search the History list.

  • Use the Media bar to listen to media files and Internet radio stations while you browse the Web. Choose from a wide variety of music and talk radio stations.

  • Add a Web page to your list of favorite pages. Any time you want to open that page, just click the Favorites button on the toolbar, and then click the shortcut in the Favorites list.

  • To return to the last page you viewed, click the Back button on the toolbar.

  • To view one of the last nine pages you visited in this session, click the arrow to the side of the Back or Forward button, and then click the page you want from the list.
