Grammar (The Present Continuous Tense) Exercise # 1. Put the verbs in the brackets either in the Present Continuous or in the Present Indefinite Tense:

1) What’s the matter? Where __ the flavour (to come) from? From the kitchen. Mother (to stew) meat now. 2) She seldom (to come) home so early. 3) Hurry up! We (to start) to cook our national Ukrainian borsch in five minutes. 4) The water (to boil). What __ you (to put) into borsch? 5) I usually (to boil) eggs for 3-5 minutes. 6) Where (to be) the children? They (to play) computer games now? 7) What (to do) you now? I (to make) an apple pie. 8) You (to hear) him? I (to listen) very attentively, but I (not to hear) him at all. 9) Are you busy now? Yes, I am. I (to translate) the text “Ukrainian cuisine” for tomorrow’s English lesson. 10. She always (to tell) the truth. We (to believe) her.

Exercise # 2. Answer the following questions in the Present Continuous Tense:

A) 1. What restaurant are they going now?

2. What song is a popular singer singing now?

3. What are they laughing at?

4. Whose photos is he showing?

5. Who are you looking at?

6. What juice are you drinking now?

7. What rule is the teacher explaining now?

B) A friend of yours is planning to go on holidays very soon. Ask him about his plans. Use the words in brackets to make your sentences as in the model: Where (to go)? – Where are you going?

1. When (to leave)? 2. (To go) alone? 3. (To go) by car? 4. Where (to stay)? 5. How long (to stay)? 6. (To meet) your friends? 7. Who (to come) to see off? 8. (To take) luggage?

Exercise # 3. Put the verb into the most suitable form, Present Indefinite or Present Continuous, with a future meaning:

1. We (to have) a party next Sunday. 2. What time (to leave) the next train for Cambridge? 3. What you (to do) on Monday evening? 4. The next show (to start) at 7:30. 5. You know, Jane (to come) tomorrow and she (to plan) to stay here for a fortnight. 6. The art exhibition (to open) in three days and (to close) in two weeks.7. Alec and Mary (to get married) next week. 8. The liner (to leave) Dover at 11 a.m. Don’t miss it. 9. John (to meet) his boss tomorrow.

Exercise # 4. Give a short account of what your family is doing at the moment.
