The Internet

Text 1. The Internet connects many computers together. In order to find information on the Internet, you use the World Wide Web (WWW). The web is made up of millions of websites. The websites are like books with pages that you look at on your computer. The pages of website are called webpages and the first page of a website is called the homepage.

Text 2. You need a computer and a telephone line in order to connect to the Internet. You also need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect your telephone system to the Internet.

Text 3. You can use the Internet to do almost anything!

  • Use e-mail to exchange messages;

  • enter chat-rooms to talk to people around the world about your interests and hobbies;

  • shop online;

  • use the World Wide Web to get information. This is called surfing the net.

Text 4. All websites have addresses to help you find them. If you don’t know the address of a website, you can use a search engine such as Yahoo! or Google. In order to find the address, type in some keywords. The search engine will look for all the websites with these keywords. For example, if you typed in the keywords ‘African elephants’, the search engine would look for websites with these words. It would then give you a list of all the websites about African elephants.
