4. Equipment (обладнання) used in some Sports and Games

For canoeing you need a paddle, for rowing you need an oar, for fishing - a rod-line, for archery - a bow.

For most ball games you need boots or training shoes (trainers). For tennis, squash and badminton you need a racket. For badminton you also need a shuttlecock.

For cricket, table-tennis and baseball you need a bat. For snooker, pool and billiards you need a cue. For hockey you need a stick and a puck.

For golf you need a club. For darts you need a dart.

In tennis, volley-ball and badminton there is a net across the middle of the court. There is also a net around each goal in football.

In basketball two net baskets, fixed to metal rings high up off the ground, and a ball are used.

In athletics you need a vest, shorts, running shoes or spikes. For motor racing you need a crash helmet.

For swimming a woman needs a swimming costume and a man needs trunks.

For boxing you need a vest, shorts, gloves and boots.

For skiing you need sticks, ski suit, ski boots.

In discus throwing a discus is used.

In javelin throwing a javelin is used.

In hammer throwing a hammer is used.

In pole-vaulting a pole is used.

In chess a chess-board and 16 pieces (chess-men) for each player are used. In draughts ( AmE checkers) a draughtboard (AmE checkerboard) and 12 round pieces (draughts-men) for each player are used.

Skiing competitions are held on slopes: slope n – схил

The playing area for football and the area around for spectators is called stadium, e.g. Wimbley Stadium.
