Some Good Rules
1. Every man is the architect of his own fortune.
2. A man is known by the company he keeps.
3. Handsome is as handsome does.
4. A bird may be known by its song.
5. The devil is not so black as he is painted.
A Good Beginning
Ann: Hi, Bob. How are you?
Bob: Hello, Ann. I'm fine, thanks. And you?
Ann: Great. Look here, Bob, can you imagine yourself as a newspaper
correspondent?
Bob: Why, of course. I like writing articles for the university newspaper. It's my
hobby. I'm editor of the university newspaper, you know.
Ann: So you are an experienced journalist already. I'd like to be a journalist too, but
I'm afraid I've no talent.
Bob: It's really a hard job. But when you see the article in the newspaper, you feel
satisfied.
Ann: I'd like to know how it's done.
Bob: It takes a lot of time and effort indeed.
Ann: That's why you took so tired after each issue comes out.
Bob: Care killed the cat*, they say. But I am joking, of course. It's not so difficult as
it seems to be. The more experience you have the easier it gets. The devil is not
so black as he is painted**, you know.
Ann: Well, I'd better go now. I'm afraid to be late for my classes. Give my regards to
Helen and Pete. See you.
Bob: Bye.
Notes
*Care killed the cat - поел. Забота убила кошку (по английскому народному поверью у кошки девять жизней: ср. живуч, как кошка). Ср.: Заботы до добра не доводят. Не работа старит, а забота.
**The devil is not so black as he is painted - поел. Не так страшен дьявол, как его малюют. Ср.: Не так страшен черт, как его малюют.
