Snow sports in Val di Fiemme
Between the Lagorai mountain chain and the Latemar range Val di Fiemme opens its doors to the winter kingdom. Fiery sunrises and sunsets that colour in the mountains and snow will leave long and lasting imprint on everybody. A continuous alternation of forests and spacious glades and the rhythmic movement of cross country skiers animate the soft contours of these rolling highlands. A landscape was created by nature but conserved and developed by the people. It is in these glades that about 70 kilometers of cross-country tracks crisscross in a network of rings around some of the best known cross-country ski centers in Val di Fiemme. They are well organized centers able to satisfy the demands of every crosscountry skier, whether an expert or a beginner. Qualified instructors, places for waxing and technical assistance, refreshment, regularly groomed and efficient tracks for the free and classic styles are always at Val di Fiemme guests’ disposal. There are lots of small mountain huts and cabins along the tracks where steaming polenta is served to replenish those who have used up all their energy on skis.
Val di Fiemme has superb skiing facilities to offer: excellent terrain for first-timers and for real thrills; 23 modern lifts with 60 kms of run; a fast gondola, which gives the more expert skiers the pleasure of a long exciting descent of three kilometers within the sight of the peaks; 40 kilometers of daily groomed runs, also served by programmed snow installations.
Those who want to stretch their legs on the snow can go skiing in the crosscountry ski centre, or on the small circuits. In winter it is possible to combine the pleasure of skiing, a mountaineering tour accompanied by alpine guides with beneficial water cure at the ancient spring. Snowboard enthusiasts can enjoy this “effervescent” sport in peace and safety in the recently made “Snow Park”.
A long calendar of events animates the season of cross-country skiing in these centres from January to March. The highland resorts offer a wide choice of accommodation that is informal and exclusive at the same time. Attention is placed on services and opportunities for non-skiers: skating, sledging (sledge lift available), horse riding, indoor swimming pools, gyms, numerous other amenities. But downhill and cross-country skiers are not the only ones to appreciate the quality of the environment and hospitality on the highlands. Among the most assiduous guests in recent seasons have been enthusiasts of sleddog who come here to train and compete with their "pulkas" drawn by teams of splendid Siberian dogs. And apart from the well groomed trails of the cross-country centres, the highlands in winter can be explored on snow shoes, leaving solitary tracks on the powder snow along the forest roads.
