Lecture 3. Etymological Survey of f the English Word-Stock
1. Origin of English Words.
2. Words of Native Origin.
3. Borrowed Words.
4. Assimilation of Borrowings.
5. Influence of Borrowings.
According to the origin the word-stock of the English language may be subdivided into two main sets. The elements of one are native words the elements of the other are borrowed.
Diachronically native words are subdivided into three main layers: words of the Indo-European origin, words of the Common Germanic origin and English words proper. English words proper have no cognates in other languages.
Borrowed words enter the language in two ways: through oral speech and through written speech. Oral borrowings took place in the early period of history.
Borrowings may be direct or indirect, through other languages. The term source of borrowing should be applied to the language from which the loan word was taken into English. The term origin of borrowing refers to the language to which the may be traced.
Among the most important and most influential historical causes of borrowings are: the Roman invasion, the introduction of Christianity, Danish and Norman conquests. In modern times direct linguistic contacts political, economical and cultural relationships with other nations.
According to the degree of assimilation all loan words can be divided into three groups: completely assimilated borrowings, partially assimilated borrowings, unassimilated borrowings.
The borrowed words influenced the pronunciation of English words and the sound system, word structure and the system of word-formation, the semantic structure of English words and the lexical territorial divergence.
