Requirements to oral presentation
The examination board consists of 6 examiners.
An oral presentation lasts for about 5 minutes and discussion - 25 minutes.
During the examination a written record of mistakes is kept.
The oral presentation should be a finilized information parcel so that the examiners do not have to ask questions that go beyond the scope of the research.
The oral presentation includes:
- brief introduction to the work with an indication of the thesis statement;
- the aim of the work
- description of the methods and techniques employed;
- conclusion
Discussion: Examiners may ask questions in order to clarify particular issues of ambiguous nature.
Examiners, in the course of the discussion. consider linguistic proficiency of the students: their ability to communicate information, their listening and speaking skills as well as their reaction to the questions and comments of examiners.
Assessment
The maximum score for an oral presentation is 100 points. It is split as follows:
Failure: 0-55 points
1) lack of fluency
2) inadequate presentation of one’s ideas
3) numerous gross grammar, lexical and stylistic mistakes that affect understanding
4) wrong usage
5) inability to understand questions and comments of examiners
6) inadequate reaction to questions and comments of examiners.
Satisfactory: 55-70 points
1) lack of fluency
2) difficulties in expressing ideas
3) a number of gross grammar, lexical and stylistic mistakes that hinder understanding
4) confused usage
5) difficulties in understanding questions and comments of examiners
6) poor reaction to questions and comments of examiners
Good: 71-85 points
1) fluent speech
2) good expression of ideas
3) few minor mistakes that do not affect understanding
4) good comprehensive, developed vocabulary
5) advanced comprehension skills
6) good reaction to questions and comments of examiners
Excellent: 86-100 points
1) excellent fluency
2) ability to communicate sophisticated ideas
3) occasional minor mistakes that do not affect understanding
4) rich, advanced vocabulary
5) excellent comprehension skills
6) sophisticated reaction to examiners’ question and comments
The final grade is estimated on the basis of a total average score for the written and oral exams according to the formula given below.
Let’s assume that the written part is assessed at 75 out of 100 points. The oral part is assessed at 89 points.
Then the total average score will be:
75 Point plus 89 points divided by 2 makes 82 points
The score is then converted into a 5-point system which equals 4 (good).
