State exam in the english language
At the IBS-Plekhanov, the State exam in the English language is a double-faceted academic issue that reflects a continuous nature of the educational process. On the one hand, it is aimed at a comprehensive final assessment of all language knowledge and skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) built up by the students during the whole course of studies. On the other hand, however, it presumes consolidation of skills and techniques and building students' confidence before their most thrilling academic experience - thesis defense.
To this end, the State exam in the English language is so designed that while preparing for it the students can develop strategies and practice conducting information search, dealing with theoretical matters in practical situations, making presentations, responding to questions, etc.
As the main emphasis in the English language course at the IBS-Plekhanov is placed on ESP (English for specific purposes), linguistic knowledge and skills are assessed in a professional context around the topics of the students’ graduation assignments; namely, ‘Marketing’ and “Finance and Credit’, which eventually provides students with guidance in techniques and strategies needed for success when defending a thesis.
Therefore, the exam consists of two parts: a written assignment based on the subject matter of a student’s thesis (work) and its oral presentation. The exam is conducted in two stages: first, students are to complete a written assignment and to turn it in 10 days before the second stage - its oral presentation to the examination board.
There are a number of format and contextual requirements to the written work and oral presentation within the framework of the state exam in the English language.
Requirements to written document
1.1. Written document
A written document is based on the field research of the graduation assignment of no more than 10 pages long. At the same time, it should not be cut off at a random point but should be a well-structured finalized information parcel representing a freestanding piece of research. In other words, a written document should be an extended summary of a student’s draft field research.
Obviously, the written document should follow a certain format. When typing, Font 12 and 1,5 interval between the lines are to be used. The document should contain the following elements:
Front Matter Title Page
Abstract
Table of Contents
Body Introduction and Methodology
Text - Main Body
Conclusions
Back Matter Bibliography
1.1. Title Page
The title page contains all formal data, such as the name of the Academy and the Department, the name of the author and the supervisor, the year when the work was written. Pay special attention to the layout of the title page so that it is user-friendly.
1.3. Abstract
Abstract goes immediately after the title page and before the table of contents.
It is necessary to introduce the language examiners into the subject matter of the whole work and to set up the background for them to understand the part presented at the state exam. Abstract is a short written statement of the most important ideas of your thesis; therefore, it should be based on general ideas or principles rather than specific examples or real events. Abstract summarizes and highlights the information about the purpose, scope, methods, results and conclusions of the original document. It should be written in such a way that it can be read independently of the written document, at the same time retaining the essential elements of the original work. Be sure, therefore, to include your preliminary conclusions in your abstract.
Make your abstract reader-friendly and try to accommodate the gist of your work in no more than half an A4 page.
