What is management?

Management is the art and science of getting things done through other people.

There are 5 kinds of tasks which are generic to all management jobs. They are planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and controlling.

There are different types of management, the most important of them are production management, financial management, human resources management, marketing management.

But management also includes the personnel who have the right to make decisions that influence company's affairs.

There are three management levels in the organization: top management middle management and operating management or first level management. Top management includes the president, vice-presidents and general manager. Middle management includes department managers, plant managers, and production superintendents.

Any manager can be successful only if he has his own team. Here are 8 characteristics, which will help you to analyze the “health” of the team. A mission.

  1. Common objectives.

  2. Interdependence of members.

  3. An effective relationship to the environment.

  4. A decision-making system.

  5. Well motivated members.

  6. An effective leader.

  7. Well-organized, effective meetings.

Human resource management

Human resource management is a function performed in organizations which facilitates the most effective use of employees to achieve an organization’s goals.

The main areas of human resource management for the manager are staffing (recruitment), training and development, supervision and motivation.

Staffing involves such things as:

  • know how many people you will need with what skills and attributes;

  • know how to attract staff to your business;

  • know where suitable applicants can be found;

Training and development involves giving staff the skills and knowledge they need to do their work effectively.

Supervision. The three principles of “firm, fair and friendly” provide a useful way to approach staff supervision.

Motivation. There can be different motivators, such as interests and development, monetary rewards, sociability, convenience.
