2.3.2. Условные предложения смешанного типа Mixed Conditionals

Иногда действия придаточного и главного предложений относятся к разным периодам времени. В таких случаях в каждой части условного предложения употребляются глагольные формы, требуемые по смыслу. Как правило, наблюдается следующая корреляция форм:

If – clause

Main clause

Type 2 (past simple/past continuous)

If nobody paid the bill.

Если никто не оплатил счет.

Type 1 (future/imperative/a modal verb + infinitive)

the electricity will be cut off.

электричество будет отключено.

Type 2 (past simple/past continuous)

If he had money.

Если бы у него были деньги(сейчас).

Type 3 (would/could/might + have + past participle)

he would have bought her a gift.

он купил бы ей подарок. (раньше)

Type 3 (past perfect/ past perfect continuous)

If he had won the lottery.

Если бы он выиграл в лотерею (раньше).

Type 2 (would/could/might + infinitive)

he wouldn't be asking for money now.

он не просил бы сейчас денег.

Такие условные предложения называют предложениями смешанного типаthe "mixed conditional".

Ex. 22. Read the following sentences. Comment on the mixed conditionals used. Translate the sentences into Russian:

1. I should be very angry if you had brought the company here. 2. You would be well now if you had consulted the doctor in time. 3. She wouldn't be pale and thin if she hadn't been ill quite for a while. 4. He would know now what to do if he had followed his father's advice. 5. Just think, if I'd bought those pictures, I should be a rich man. 6. If you had gone to see them yesterday, you'd know what the matter is. 7. If Janet had had a lot of practice in English last year, she would speak it perfectly. 8. I shouldn't be angry with you if you had answered my question properly. 9. If he were a kind man, he wouldn't have spoken to the girl in such a way. 10. If I knew her well I should have gone to her party too. 11. If you had a better command of English, you would have translated the text better.
