TOPIC 6.1. EDUCATION. VOCATIONAL EDUCATIONAL ESTABLISHMENTS

Task 1: read the text to brush up the system of secondary education in the UK.

British education made simple

There are many different types of schools in Britain. There are a state sector and an independent / private sector in education. 93 % of children attend state schools. 7% of children attend private schools.

The state sector consists of: 1) the comprehensive system;

2) The selective system.

The independent / private sector consists of: 3) the private system.

Besides, there are :

  • schools for boys only,

  • schools for girls only,

  • mixed schools – for boys and girls,

  • voluntary schools – often with a religious background.

The state sector

At the age of 5 children go to a nursery school. At the age of 7 they go to a junior school. Nursery and junior schools are primary schools. At the age of 11 children get elementary / primary education.

Then children can choose at a comprehensive system or a selective system.

The comprehensive system

90% of children who go to state schools go to comprehensive schools. It means that all children go from one school to another without taking exams, and without being selected according to their abilities.

The selective system

The older system of education is a selective system. Children are selected according to their abilities. Children take exams at the age of 11. These exams are called the 11plus. Those children who pass the 11plus exams successfully go to a grammar school. They are only about 20%. These children get more academic secondary education.

Those children who don’t pass the 11 plus exams successfully go to a modern secondary school. These children get less academic and more vocational education.

Children study at secondary schools till the age of 16 and get secondary education.

The private system

There are three levels of private schools:

  1. from the age of 4 to 8: primary schools;

  2. from the age of 8 to 13: preparatory (= prep) schools; children take exams;

  3. from the age of 13 to 18: public schools.

Most of the preparatory and public schools are boarding schools. It means the children live at schools during the school terms. Public schools are usually very expensive.
