Philosophy is Still at the Top

Modern philosophies are on friendly terms both with the printed word and the Internet.

The Faculty of Philosophy is considered to have been founded on 25 September 1940, when it was re-established by the decree of the Soviet Government. However, its history dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. It was not until 1724 that Peter I announced its establishment within the framework of the Academy of Sciences. The formal opening ceremony took place in 1819 though. It was the year when the Faculty of Philosophy and Law was established by order of Alexander I. Later, in 1835, it was divided into two independent departments. By 1850 the Faculty had gained the notorious reputation of being a politically unreliable institution and was soon closed, but the leading lights, however, survived. From 1860 till the beginning of the 1920s it was represented by one all-university department at the Faculty of History and Philosophy. But even in such a “reduced” state it produced for Russian science quite a few celebrated names.

Nowadays the Faculty of Philosophy contains 16 departments with 200 teaching stuff. As for the number of undergraduates and post-graduates, it comes to over 1,500. Due to the scientific and educational potential concentrated here, the Faculty may be considered one of the most significant scientific and cultural centres both in Russia and in the world. The Faculty maintains close contacts with 27 of the largest universities of Europe, Asia and America. All this gives its graduates a chance to apply their capacities and skills.

It should be mentioned that graduates from the Faculty of Philosophy work in more than a hundred countries in the world. Thus, the high prestige of the Faculty is ensured not only by its established reputation in the intellectual community both in this country and abroad, but also by the “applied” character of the education it gives, which meets the real demands of society.

Today the Faculty trains specialists in the following fields: Philosophy, Political Science, Philosophy of Culture and Religion, Conflict Management. Subjects for research can be chosen from History of Philosophy, Ontology and Theory of Knowledge, Logic, Social Philosophy and Philosophy of History, History of Russian Philosophy, Ethics and Aesthetics, History of Foreign Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and Engineering, Philosophical Anthropology. Students may choose a variety of routes to further study. Graduates can work in our educational and scientific-research institutions in the field of the Humanities (and philosophy in particular).

The training of specialists in Political Science is ensured by the Institute of Political Science, which offers three different specializations: Theory of Politics, Comparative Political Science and Applied Political Studies. Besides, the Institute offers a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree programme and a 2-year graduate programme leading to the Master’s Degree. Three programmes are intended for those who already have a Diploma in Higher Education and wish to continue their education in the sphere of Political Science.

At present the Institute is continuing its Master’s training programme “The Theory of the Global Political Process and International Relationships”. It is a joint-project shared amongst Faculties of Philosophy, Law and Economics and two Italian Universities. Graduates of the Institute of Political Science are able to apply their knowledge both in the sphere of science or education and in various political organizations and government bodies at all levels.
