The Jozef Pilsudski Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw is the largest Polish higher educational institution in the field of physical education. The Academy trains physical education teachers, sports coaches and specialists in the fields of recreation, rehabilitation and tourism. It is one of the centers of

scientific research, it functions as a major sports centre and it plays a key role¹ in popularizing physical education.

The Academy recognized as a university of physical education was founded in 1929 as the Central Institute of Physical Education. It was named after the First Marshal of Poland - Jozef Pilsudski² and in 1938 transformed into an academic educational institution

The Academy borders a national park and houses classrooms and laboratories, various sports courts and grounds. There are as well two water sports centers in it. The Academy has two faculties: the Faculty of Physical Education and the Faculty of Rehabilitation. The Faculty of Physical Education provides programs of 3 and 4,5 years for teachers of physical education and 5 years for Master's Degree program in motor rehabilitation.

The Academy also conducts postgraduate and doctorate programs in selected fields ³of physical education and sports.

The American Academy of Physical Education is an honorary organization composed of individuals who have made significant contribution to the field of physical education.

It was officially founded in 1930. During the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries as scientific knowledge expanded and professional societies appeared "academies" were founded in various specialized fields. These academies elected to fellowship men and women who made significant contributions to their particular fields. The American Academy of Physical Education has paralleled the endeavors of academies in several other fields. It undertook long-range project of major importance to contemporary physical education.

The Academy encourages its members:

- to assist students at schools and colleges as well as general public to undertake exercise, fitness and physical activities so that they could understand "how" and "why" to exercise properly;

- to develop moral and ethical values within the physical education program. The educational preparation of PE teachers and athletic coaches should place emphasis upon moral and ethical values;

- to establish the minimum of theoretical knowledge and technical skills in all PE teachers and coaches.

The idea of rehabilitation through exercises and games began during the Second World War. Sport provides physical and psychological relief to the disabled people. The Belarusian state pays great attention ' to physical education and sports training of the disabled. At present progress in physical training and sports among the disabled and expansion of international sports relations are of most importance in our Republic.

There have been created Republican Federations for physical training and sports for blind people, people with locomotive deficiency and hearing problems², for mentally and physically retarded children³. 15 sports clubs are on function in Belarus. Annually about 70 republican competitions of the disabled are held in 23 sports. The combined team of the Republic of Belarus taking part for the first time in the IX Summer Paralympic Games in Barcelona gained the 9^l" place. Three of Belarusian athletes were awarded champion titles. Belarusian team of disabled children competes on the equal in the international sports arena.

Belarusian disabled athletes are among the leaders of the Disabled Sports Movement in the world.
