1. Phonetics as a science, its aim and definition. 2 systems: segmental; suprasegmental.

The term "phonetics" comes - from the Greek word "pho:n" - meaning sound, voice and "-tica" - a science. So, phonetics is a special science which studies the phonetic substance and expressions area of the language. The linguistic form and content are described by other brunches of linguistics, namely grammar (morphology and syntax) lexicology (vocabulary, the formation and the meaning of the words) and stylistics (expressive - emotional meaning). The purpose of phonetics - be ordered and a coherent system of rules and laws pronunciation of speech sounds, on which you can learn how to pronounce the sounds. Theoretical phonetics is mainly concerned with the functioning of phonetic units in the language.

Phonetics studies the sound system of the language, that is segmental units (phonemes, allophones), suprasegmental units (word stress, syllabic structure, rhythmic organization, intonation). Phonetics is closely connected with general linguistics but has its own subject matter (Investigation).

Thus phonetics is divided into two major components: segmental phonetics, which is concerned with individual sounds (i.e. "segments" of speech), their behaviour; and suprasegmental phonetics whose domain is the larger units of connected speech: syllables, words, phrases and texts.

2. Its connection with other linguistic and non – linguistic sciences

It is connected with a number of linguistic, such as lexicology, phonetics, grammar, history of the language, stylistics and others, and with non-linguistic sciences, such as physics, physiology, anatomy, history and others.

Phonetics is directly linked with the spelling: Phonetics formulates the rules of pronunciation of individual sounds and their groups, analyses and establishes the rules for the relationship between phonemes and grapheme. Phonetics is connected with medicine and psychology in the treatment of people with pathology of speech. Phonetics is associated with a number of technical disciplines. First of all, this is an experimental phonetics - construct the device, conduct research and calculate the result.

3. Theoretical and practical significance of phonetics

Theoretical phonetics decides the General issues associated with the audio side of the language, studying the conditions of education of sounds, the regularities of changes of sounds, the division of the voice of the flow of one or another language. If the theoretical phonetics compares the phenomenon of the two languages - it is comparative. Comparative phonetics of the deals with the comparative study of phonetic systems of several languages.

Practical phonetics is based on the provisions of theoretical phonetics. The practical study of languages is of great importance, for example, for setting the correct pronunciation of the sounds of the native and foreign languages, in spelling, and in the creation of scripts for non-written languages. These practical phonetics are used in speech therapists.
