Assignment 7 Chapter 6 – раrt 2 (pp. 132-152)

1. Transcribe, pronounce and translate the following words:

prefect, juvenile, delinquent, realm

2. a) Look up the following in the dictionary of language and culture:

O-level, sixth form, Oxbridge, RP.

b) Find the following words and expressions in the text, look them up in the English-English dictionary and translate them into Russian. Reproduce the situations in which they are used:

to keep a tight hand on sb (p. 136), to take to doing sth (p. 138), to keep up with sth (p. 138), to count on sb (p. 141), to get into the habit of doing sth, not to cut much of a figure (p. 144).

3. Find the English for the following words and expressions and reproduce the situations in which they are used:

4. Answer the questions and do the tasks:

1) What did Julianne think about God’s existence?

2) How was life in Curzon Street changing? What did Carmel’s father think about cars? How was the family doing?

3) What virtues of the outside world did Carmel’s mother teach her daughter? Comment on the following: “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. What did Carmel make of it? What do you think about it?

4) What task did the mother set to her daughter? What metaphor is used to describe success in life? What do you think of this choice of metaphor? Do you agree that it is ruthless people who rise highest in life?

5) What was the father always busy with? How did he and Carmel’s mother differ from each other?

6) What was Carmel like in her teens? Can one really be both a quiet and undemanding child and a tyrant or a monster of egotism?

7) In what way did the mother keep a tight hand on her social life? Why didn’t the parents let the girl watch TV in the evening? Why did Carmel press her lips shut while watching the quiz show University Challenge?

13) What was considered to be distasteful behaviour at the Holy Redeemer? How did mother Benedict learn that Carmel had broken the rule? Explain what ‘a constant and habitual public muncher’ means.

18) Why did Julianne think that Carmel would feel ill at ease at Oxford or Cambridge? Why was she sure that people would laugh at Carmel’s accent there? (What do you know about RP?).

19) What made Karina confide in Carmel? What happened to Karina’s mother?

20) What made Julianne worry when she learnt that Karina was going to enter a college in London?

5. Read and translate the passage on pp. 136-137 from “My mother kept a tight hand on my social life ...” up to “... the kind of people you’d cross the street to avoid”.

6. Fill in the character sketch pages. Compare your notes with your partner.

7. Translate the sentences into English using the vocabulary of ex. 2, 3.

8. Summarize the following and say what you think about it:

b) Carmel’s mother’s outlook on life presented in this extract.
