Assignment 6 Chapter 6 – раrt 1 (pp. 112-131)

1. Transcribe, pronounce and translate the following words:

sapphire, opaque, hydrangea, agenda

2. Find the following words and expressions in the text, look them up in the English-English dictionary and translate them into Russian. Reproduce the situations in which they are used:

to be in for sth (p.113), to simper (p.114), to be at close quarters (p.114), to be clad in (p. 117), bingo hall (p.123), bowels club (p.124), to be reluctant to do sth (p.125), to put one’s shoulder to the wheel (p.127), academic successes (p.129), hotbed (p.129), to run the risk of a snub (p.130).

3. Find the English for the following words and expressions and reproduce the situations in which they are used :

мне хорошо разъяснили / мне дали ясно понять (с.113), нести / тащить сумку (с.113), прочный (с.116), папиросная бумага (с.116), смахнуть слезу рукой (рукавом) (с.118), очень хорошо отвечать на экзамене (с.128).

4. Answer the questions and do the tasks:

1) What clothes did Carmel’s and Karina’s parents have to buy for their daughters before they sent them to the Holy Redeemer?

2) Why did Carmel’s father repeat what his wife said? Did he require any explanation? What shows that Carmel’s mother did not understand his ‘method of communication’? (p.112)

3) What names of colours can you find on pp.112-113? What do you think about the choice of the colours?

4) Describe Carmel’s first visit to the shop. Find words and expressions which show that Carmel felt ill at ease and even frightened. (pp. 113-116)

6) Characterize Carmel’s mother regarding the following:

a. ‘She was simpering smiles now: for the duration I was her darling’ (p.114)

‘She was attending to me as if I were a three-year-old, impressing the saleslady with her maternal skills.’ (p.115)

b. ‘My mother looked at me fearfully, as if I were a prodigy, a monster…’ (p.120-121)

‘She clamped my hat on my head and thrust me out into Curzon Street.’

7) Consider the following as a way of showing the size of a thing:

‘… it came to mid-thigh’ (p.115)

‘The cuffs hung below my hands as if I’d climbed into the body of an ape.’ (p.115)

Find two more similar examples (on p.113 and p.116).

8) What was the dress code like in the Holy Redeemer? Dwell upon the colours of the clothes, the length of the dresses. Why was Carmel’s mother taken aback when she saw those ‘durable and absolutely recommended Diana shoes’?

9) What did Karina think of Carmel’s mother? What comments did Karina pass on her? (p.112, p.119). How does it characterize Karina?

10) Carmel’s mother compares her daughter with Karina. What makes her do it? (p.117, p.121)

11) Carmel compares Karina with herself (p.121-122). What is the difference between Carmel’s comparison and that of her mother’s (although the objects compared are the same)?

12) Why did Karina think that Carmel shouldn’t speak to Susan Millington?

13) How does Carmel describe people of a higher social class? What are the key words in describing luxurious life? (p.124)

14) Comment upon the way Karina mocks Carmel. (p.125)

16) What were other girls at the Holy Redeemer like? Why did Carmel call herself and Karina a worthy social experiment? (p.p. 127-128)

17) Speak about Carmel’s academic progress at the Holy Redeemer. What made Julianne notice her?

18) What effect does the writer achieve by repetitions and syntactical parallelism (e.g. ‘like me she carried …, like me she wore …’ – p.121)? Find similar examples on p.128, p.129.

19) What were common prejudices about the life in the convent? Was the life at the Holy Redeemer like that?

20) What were the girls’ prospects as Carmel thought them to be? What shows her pessimism? (p.p.129-130)

21) Did they inflict any punishment on the girls at the Holy Redeemer? Did they reward the girls for the efforts they made?

5. Read and translate the passage on p. 128 from “Julianne was a doctor’s daughter. ...” up to “... if once I fell into it.”.

6. Fill in the character sketch pages. Compare your notes with your partner.

7. Translate the sentences into English using the vocabulary of ex. 2, 3.

6) Родители Анны отправили дочь в престижный колледж, где она усердно училась, и гордились ее успехами в учебе.

7) За пропуски и неуспеваемость Майку грозило отчисление из университета.

8. Discuss the following in class:
