1. Transcribe, pronounce and translate the following words:

severance, insolence, burgundy, cashmere, cologne, pious, the Redeemer

2. Find the following words and expressions in the text, look them up in the English-English dictionary and translate them into Russian. Reproduce the situations in which they are used:

to press on (p.50), to give cheek (p.53), to be billeted in (p.55), to cast a glance at (p.59), to sit for (p.62), to prime sb for sth (p.63)

3. Find the English for the following words and expressions and reproduce the situations in which they are used :

4. Answer the questions and do the tasks:

1) What does Carmel compare knitting to? Write out examples of these comparisons and dwell upon them.

2) Why did mothers dote on Karina and hold her up as an example?

3) What was Karina good at? Why?

4) What did Carmel think of Karina? Why didn’t she like her?

5) Why did Carmel think it was a waste of time talking to adults?

6) Why was Carmel sure that she wouldn’t be caned?

7) What did Carmel dislike about Sister Basil?

8) Comment upon the following:

“The wardrobe doors stood open and I saw Julianne’s eyes pass over crushed silk and cashmere…” (p.57)

“I would kill for this coat.” (p.57)

“I saw her patient hatred take root.” (p.58)

“… if I had scissors I could cut her string bag, and her loaves would tumble out … and she’d catch it from her mother.” (p.61)

5. Read and translate the passage on pp. 54-55 from “The next time ...” up to “... turned white”.

6. Start making a character sketch of Lynette. Fill in the other character sketch pages. Compare your notes with your partner.

7. Translate the sentences into English using the vocabulary of ex. 2, 3.

7) Родители отправляли детей спать, но они все-таки сумели найти предлог, чтобы им разрешили поиграть еще полчаса.

8) После непродолжительного спора с отцом Майк, засучив рукава, принялся сам мыть машину.
