What authors of fairy tales do you know?

(Pupils’ answers:

• Fairy tales resurfaced in literature in the 17th century, with Charles Perrault, who fixed the forms of Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.

• The Brothers Grimm collected folk stories from German households in the 19th century. Some of their tales have dark under-currents of psychology, others are romantic and amusing.

• Hans Christian Andersen grew up in a Danish village and moved to the big city. His graceful and artistic fairy tales poke fun at vanity.)

• Marshak, Samuil is considered to be one of the foremost translators of Shakespeare's sonnets, English nursery rhymes and ballads. Most of his fairy tales are based on traditional folk tales. He has also retold in rhyme some fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen. Marshak wrote The Twelve Months and an original play Pussy cat's House. Marshak's status in Russian children's literature is comparable to that of Milne in Britain.)

3. Thumbelina is the heroine of a well-known story by Hans Christian Andersen. Thumbelina’s adventures begin when she is kidnapped from her home …

(After being kidnapped by the frog’s mother and imprisoned on a water lily-leaf, Thumbelina is rescued. At the end she finds a more suitable husband: the king of the flower angels, who is human in form and just her size)

4. The role of the fairy godmother in the story of Cinderella was filled by a variety of magical agents in other versions of the tale.

(The fact that Yeh-hsien’s wishes are granted by the bones of her pet fish, and Rashin Coatie’s by the corpse of her pet calf, is one of the striking similarities between the Chinese and Scottish tales. The little white bird is from the German tale.)

5. In one Brothers Grimm story, four animals — a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster — learn that they have outlived their usefulness to their owners, and are to be killed. Rather than meekly accepting their fate, they set off together to start a new life as musitians.

(The animals in the The Bremen Town-Musicians never actually reach the town of Bremen to take up their chosen career.)
