1. Text grammar.

Practical assignment. Trace the phenomena of cohesion and coherence in the following discourse. Single out the lexical and grammatical means of establishing connection a) between words within sentences comprising the story; b) between sentences within the whole text:

One warm spring day, four high school students skipped their first period class to go for a drive. When they arrived at school, they told the teacher their car had a flat tire on the way.

The teacher smiled understandingly and said, «You missed an important test this morning. Please sit apart from one another and get out a sheet of paper».

The students confidently settled into their chairs and the teacher continued, «No talking, please. Now write the answer to this question: «Which tire was flat?».

Direction: pay special attention to the use of pronouns, tense forms, words belonging to certain semantic field, phenomena and notions connected with the ideas expressed in the story.
