Introduction

This unit describes the steps to be followed to set up a personal computer. The equipment provided in the package is:

— the computer

— a power supply unit

— an aerial lead

— a micro-disk drive

— a micro-disk drive lead

1 Listening

You are going to hear an extract from the introductory tape supplied with the QD Personal Computer. The first section explains how to set up the system. A VDU is not provided in the package, and so the user needs to use a TV set. As you listen, number the steps in the boxes in the diagram. There are 12 steps to number. The first one has been done for you.

2 Presentation

On the tape you heard various instructions about how to set up the QD Personal Computer. These instructions were either in the positive or negative. Look at the examples below.

POSITIVE NEGATIVE

Look at the back of the computer Don't use the VHF one (aerial socket)

Find the aerial lead Don't worry about which end you use

Connect one end of the aerial lead Don't forget to turn the volume down

Take the micro-disk drive Don't use force

Do the same with the other end Don't try to repair it yourself

Tune in your TV

Turn it on

Press a button

Use the tuning mechanism

Insert the 'Welcome' disk

These forms of the verb are called imperatives.

The positive imperative is the verb stem, e.g. look, find, etc.

The negative imperative is don't + the verb stem, e.g. don't use, don't try, etc.

In English the imperatives have only one form. It is the same form if you give instructions

to one person or to many people.

3 Controlled Practice

Now use the diagram below to give instructions. You must complete the sentences, using the verbs given. If you see an X in the diagram, you must use a negative imperative.

Choose from the following verbs:

take, push, follow, connect, look, do, insert, find, plug, switch
