Introduction

This unit deals with the assembly and installation of the 9450 photocopier.

1 Listening

A group of newly recruited service engineers are attending a briefing course on photocopier installation. The Technical Manager is giving the basic instructions for the installation of the 9450. As you listen, tick the appropriate column in the table. DO's mean actions that the engineer must perform; DON'Ts mean actions that the engineer mustn't perform.

2 Presentation

The instructions given by the Technical Manager were of 2 types: POSITIVE and NEGATIVE. Look at the examples below.

POSITIVE NEGATIVE

You must check if he wants the cabinet. You mustn't use any other toner except 9450.

You ought to try to persuade him ... You oughtn't to need any force.

You should assemble the copier ... You shouldn't use a surface ...

You are to take out the main copier. You are not to assemble it ...

You are supposed to just click it into You are not supposed to use force.

position.

The above verbs consist of 2 groups, as follows:

The modals don't change their form with the subject, e.g. You must check ...

He mustn't pour in the toner .. .

They should try to . ..

We oughtn't to use force ...

2. to be (supposed) to

Here the verb to be changes with the subject, e.g. I am (supposed) to assemble . . .

You are (supposed) to shake the toner ... Notice the position of not in the negative form:

He is not (supposed) to supply free copier paper.

We are not (supposed) to presume the customer doesn't want a cabinet.

3 Controlled Practice

A. Below are the steps to be followed if the 9450 jams (i.e. if paper gets stuck in the

machine). Number the steps from 1 to 12 in the correct order. Some of them have been done for you.

В. Now look at the following operator control signals for the 9450. Then complete the sentences with one word in each gap.

4 Transfer

PAIRWORK

Student B: Turn to the Key Section.

Student A: You have just bought a video cassette recorder. When you arrive home, you find that the installation and operating instructions are missing. You want to set up the machine immediately, and so you telephone the shop and ask for the Technical Manager.

You ask him to tell you the steps to follow to set up the machine.

As the Manager gives you the instructions, number the pictures from 1 to 12 below, and make short notes in the space.

After you have listened to the instructions and numbered the pictures, use your notes to repeat to your partner what you must do, so that you are sure that you have understood correctly.
