verbs denoting thinking - to know, believe, to think (have an opinion), to doubt, to guess, to imagine, to mean, to realize, to recognize, to remember, to suppose, to understand

verbs denoting emotions – to love, to like, to dislike, to hate, to prefer, to need, to satisfy, to want, to wish

verbs denoting existence – to be, to exist

verbs denoting appearance - to appear, to resemble, to seem, to look

verbs denoting possession and relationships between things - to have, to contain, to depend, to belong, to concern, to consist of, to deserve, to fit, to include, to involve, to owe, to own, to possess

verbs denoting physical properties of objects – to measure (have length, etc.), to taste (have a flavour), to smell (give out a smell), to sound, to weigh (have weight)

Some verbs (such as be, have, imagine, look, see, smell, taste, think) are stative with one meaning and non-stative with another meaning.

E.g. Do you have your air-ticket with you? (state: possession)

Are you having lunch at the moment? (action: eating)

Types of questions General question

The general question belongs to the whole sentence and the answer for it is ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

Special question

Special question belongs to a definite member of the sentence or to the group of words and requires a particular answer.

The word order in the special question is the following:

2) Auxiliary verb (modal verb)

3) Subject

4) Main verb

5) Object

6) Adverbial modifier (of place, time, manner)

In special questions to the subject there is no auxiliary verb and there is the right word order. The subject is always considered to be in Singular.

Who wants to go to the cinema?

Who lives in this house?

What country possesses some mineral resources: coal, iron ores, oil, gas and some metals?

Alternative question

Alternative question has the choice from two opportunities. It is formed like a general question, but the conjunction ‘or’ is added and then the second part of the question.

Do you like coffee or tea? – I like tea.

Is Ben in Kiev or in Moscow? - Ben is in Kiev.

Are you married or single? – I’m single.

Disjunctive (or Tail) Question

Disjunctive question consists of two parts. The first part of this question is a declarative sentence (positive or negative). The second part of the question is separated by coma and it is a short question (‘a tail’). If the first part is positive, then a tail is negative and vice versa.
