What is hobby? It is something that people do in a free time. It is something done for pleasure. They say that there are more than one thousand hobbies. A hobby must be useful. It must help your cultural development & in studies. A hobby helps to obtain knowledge, in our self-education, up-bringing, in the development of cognitive & creative abilities of a person.

Radio & tv

Radio & TV play a very important part in the life of each society & each person. Nowadays we can't imagine our life without radio & TV sets. How do people usually answer the questions like "What are you going to do tonight?" In other words, "How do people spend their free time or leisure?"

Some 20 or 30 years ago the usual answers used to be: "We're going to the cinema or theater" or "We're going to a party" or "We are having some friends round" Now you'll often hear: "We are going to stay at home & watch a TV set?

Nowadays a first rate colour TV set, like "Sony", "Sharp", has become an ordinary thing in the family, & a video cassette recorder is quickly becoming very popular too.

Modern television offers the viewers several programmes on different channels. In addition to regular newscasts you can see plays & films, operas & ballets, & watch all kinds of contests, quizzes, sporting events. The viewers can also get a lot of useful information on the educational channel. A good serial, for example a detective story or a screen version of a classical novel can keep the whole family in front of the TV set for days. Some people especially football fans spend hours watching their favourite football team in an important international event.

Invention of television has its merits & demerits. A great deal of people thinks that it makes our life more interesting. We can see such a lot thanks to television, that it holds the family together home.

Sometimes it helps us to save our money when we have such problems because we have an opportunity to watch entertainment programmes on TV at home.

TV programmes give us an opportunity to see our favourite singers & composers, actors & actress. Our little children usually watch beautiful cartoon. On the other hand many people think that they waste their time sitting in front of the box that for some people television is like a drug. But too much TV is terribly bad for people's health, especially for eyes.

Some people say that nowadays is too much advertising on television.

Others think that a great number of advertisements do a lot of good for commercial companies.

Some TV viewers are quite satisfied with the documentaries, science programmes & newscasts & think that they help them to learn a lot.

Some representatives of our society are afraid that all these political & scientific programmes are not true & they do harm our public opinion, taste & culture.
