Ex1. Study the use of subjunctive II in object clauses after the verb to wish.

  1. 1. I wish I knew it. 2. I wish the matter were not so urgent. 3. I wish we met more frequently. 4. I wish I could get in touch with John.

  2. 1. I wish I had known it. 2. I wish you had bought the ticket in advance.

  3. 1. I wish the old man would support our plan.

Ex2. Translate into Russian.

1. I wish you were home again. 2. I wish it were summer. 3. I wish it didn't rain tomorrow. 4. I wish it were not raining. 5. I wish you didn't speak like this. 6. I wish we had smth. to do at least. 7. Now she wished she had taken the chance. How I wished I had left her alone. 8. Don't you wish you had never set eyes on him? 9. I do wish I had not taken the dog. 10. I wish you had seen her face at that moment. 11. She'll wish she had taken this opportunity. 12. I wish the doctor had already left. 13. I wish the guests had not yet come.

Ex3. Change the sentences so as to use Subjunctive II as shown in the model.

MODEL: I can't tell you the truth. I wish I could tell you the truth.

Ex4. Answer the questions according to the pattern.

PATTERN: Do you know French? – I wish I knew French.

1. Are you good at acting? 2. Can you speak fluent English? 3. Have you ever been to London? 4. Do you know your friend's plans for the summer? 5. Are you familiar with this method? 6. Is it easy to win everyone's respect? 7. Do you know what weather we'll be having next week? 8. Has your father given up smoking? 9. Will this treatment be effective?

Ex5. Replace the infinitives in brackets by the forms of Subjunctive II.

Ex6. Paraphrase the sentences so as to use Subjunctive II after "to wish".

1. It's a pity he doesn't share my views. 2. I want you to set a good example to the boys. 3. She was sorry she had lost her temper and had been rude to her uncle. 4. I don't want you to punish the boy for such a trifle. 5. It's a pity you haven't insured the car against accident. 6. Jim was sorry he hadn't made an attempt to persuade them to give up the thought. 7. It's a pity we shan't reach the lake before it gets dark.
