Україна — це суверенна держава, її незалежність була проголошена в 1991 році. Україна знаходиться на сході Європи. Територія України — 603 700 квадратних кілометрів. Україна межує з Росією, Білорусією, Польщею, Молдовою, Словаччиною, Угорщиною, Румунією. Вона омивається Чорним і Азовським морями і має дуже важливі порти. Україна більше Франції і Великобританії, але значно менше Росії. 5% територій України — гірська, решта — рівнина. В Україні є Карпатські і Кримські гори. Карпати — природний гірський кордон України. Вони вкриті змішаними лісами з сосен, ялин, буків і дубів. На Волині знаходяться найгустіші ліси, які є частиною знаменитої Біловезької пущі.

Дніпро — головна річка країни; більш того, це третя за довжиною річка в Європі. Такі річки, як Дністер і Буг, також мають велике значення.

Населення України — приблизно 46 мільйонів чоловік. Крім українців, тут проживають представники багатьох інших національностей: росіяни, євреї, білоруси, молдавани, румуни, греки, татари, поляки, вірмени, німці, цигани та інші етнічні меншини. Вони внесли свій вклад в українську культуру і історію.

Найбільші міста України — Київ, Харків, Львів, Дніпропетровськ, Запоріжжя, Донецьк, Одеса, Миколаїв та інші.

Україна — розвинена промислова і сільськогосподарська країна. В Україні є такі природні багатства, як залізна руда, вугілля, природний газ, нафта, сіль та інші мінеральні ресурси. В Україні є такі галузі промисловість, як металургія, машинобудування, енергетика, хімічна промисловість і сільське господарство. Українські вчені своїми відкриттями і винаходами вносять вклад до світової науки.

В України багата історична і культурна спадщина. У країні багато вищих учбових закладів, театрів, бібліотек, музеїв, художніх галерей. В Україні є багато відомих письменників, поетів і музикантів.

Україна — член ООН; вона бере участь в роботі багатьох міжнародних організацій.

My country Ukraine 2

My name is Milena, and I was born in Ukraine, I live here is about 15 years. Ukraine is my Motherland and I`m very proud to live here. So I`d like to tell you about my country.

Ukraine is one of the largest countries of Eastern Europe. The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv. It is an independent state and it has it`s own government. It has state borders with Russia, Belarus and Moldova. It also borders on Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. In the south it is washed by the Black and the Azov seas. The population of Ukraine is about 47 million people.

People who live in Ukraine are Ukrainians. They all speak Ukrainian, the official language of the country. The national currency in Ukraine is hryvnia.

In general the climate of Ukraine is moderately continental, being subtropical only on the southern coast of the Crimea.

The biggest cities are: Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia and some others.

There are a lot of plaaces to see in Ukraine and to be proud of. There the Carpathians with their legends, castles, cathedrals and unique traditions. There`s Kyiv-one of the oldest cities in Europe, with it`s historical monuments, museums, theatres, exhibitions halls, art galleries and it`s rich cultural life. The Ukrainians are a gregarious people who will often gather in cafes or street markets to socialize. A common practice is for friends to visit each other at home to spend time chatting over tea.

We have many holidays in Ukraine, but I would like to tell you about the main of them. First it is the New Year. It`s my favourite holiday, it`s so incredible to decorate the New Year Tree, to dance near it and to receive presents. Then in a week there is Christmas. In Ukraine it is an old and popular holiday. In the morning boys go from house to house, sing traditional carols and wish everything good to the people. The people give them sweets, apples, cookies and some money. The 8th of March is the Women`s Day. We give presents to our mothers, grandmothers, girlfriends. On the 1st of May we celebrate May Day. On the 9th of May we have Victory Day. It`s a great holiday. We say "Thank you very much" to old people who took part in the Great Patriotic War and defended our Motherland against fascists. Also, in spring we have Easter, usually people bakes cakes and paint the colour eggs. On the 24th of August we celebrate Independence Day. The 1st of September is a holiday for everybody who studies.

Every country has its own national dish. In Ukraine we have too some national dishes. One of the dishes known all over the world is varenyky. They are very tasty with sour scream. Everybody who tastes it says it`s really delicious. Another dish that cannot be compared to is Ukrainian borshch. I don`t think that someone can cook it better than our Ukrainian women.

Меня зовут Милена и я родилась в Украине, я живу здесь 15 лет. Украина - моя отчизна и я очень горжусь, что здесь живу. Поэтому я хотела бы рассказать вам о моей стране.

Украина - одна с больших стран Восточной Европы. Киев - столица Украины. Это - независимое государство, которое имеет собственное правительство. Граничит с Россией, Беларусью и Молдовой. Также граничит с Польшей, Чехией, Словакией, Венгрией и Румынией. На югу Украину омывают Черное и Азовское моря. Население Украины около 47 миллионов человек.

Люди которые живут в Украине - украинцы. Они все говорят на украинском языке, официальном языке страны. Национальная валюта Украины - гривна.

В целом климат Украины умеренно-континентальный, только на южном побережье Крыма - субтропический .

Самые большие города: Киев, Харьков, Днепропетровск, Одеса, Львов, Запорожье и некоторые другие. В Украине есть много мест, которыми можно гордиться. Например, Карпаты с своими легендами, замками, соборами и уникальными традициями. Так же, Киев -  один с самых старых городов в Европе, с историческими памятниками, театрами, музеями, выставками, галереями искусств и своей богатой культурной жизнью. Украинцы - люди, которые любят часто собираться вместе в кафе или на рынке, чтобы пообщаться. У нас есть такой распространённый обычай друзьям ходить в гости друг к другу и проводить время за чашкой чая, болтая о чем-то.

В Украине мы имеем много праздников, но я хотела бы рассказать вам о главных. Первым идет Новый Год. Это мой любимый праздник, это так невероятно украшать Новогоднюю Ёлку, танцевать возле нее и получать подарки. Потом идет Рождество. В Украине это старый и популярный праздник. Утром ребята ходят от одного дома к другому, поют традиционные песни и желают людям всего хорошего. Люди дарят им сладости, яблоки, печенья и немного денег. 8 Марта - Женский День. Мы дарим подарки нашим матерям, бабушкам, подругам. 1 Мая мы празднуем праздник Первого Мая. 9 Мая - День Победы. Это - большой праздник. Мы говорим "Большое спасибо" старым людям, которые принимали участие в Великой Отечественной Войне и защищали нашу отчизну от фашистов. Также, весной мы празднуем Пасху, обычно люди пекут пироги и раскрашивают яйца. 24 Августа - День Независимости. 1 Сентября - праздник для каждого, кто учится.

Каждая страна имеет свое собственное национальное блюдо. В Украине мы тоже имеем некоторые национальные блюда. Одно с известных всему свету блюд - это вареники. Они очень вкусные со сметаной. Каждый кто пробовал их, говорил, что они действительно очень вкусные. Другое блюдо, которое не может сравниться ни с чем, это - Украинский Борщ, я не думаю, что кто-нибудь может приготовить его лучше, чем наши украинские женщины.

Kiev — The Capital of Ukraine

Kiev (or Kyiv) is the capital and the largest city of Ukraine, located in the north central part of the country on the Dnieper River. The name Kiev is derived from the name of Kiy, one of four legendary founders of the city.

By the ancient legend Kiev was founded by three brothers Kiy, Schek, Khoriv and their sister Lybid. They were surprised by the beauty of Dnieper’s hills, stopped to settle here and called the town in honour of the eldest brother-Kiev. A monument to the founders was erected at the Dnieper embankment in our days. The town’s place was chosen succesfully, the high Dnieper’s slopes were perfect protection against the raids of nomad tribes.

Kiev stretches for the space of more than 20 km along the picturesque banks of the biggest Ukrainian river — Dnieper. Its square consists 827 sq.km. The population of Kiev is about 3 millions people.

Kiev is one of the oldest Slavic centres, “Mother of Russian touns” so it was called in olden times, its age is more than 1500 years. The first settlements on the territory of modern Kiev appeared from 15000 till 20000 year ago.

During the time of Vladimir the Great (980-1015) government our city begins to develop especially rapidly. In order to consolidate Kiev Russ and to increase its international influence the prince Vladimir baptised the Russ in 988. Christianity and became that impulse for further development of written language and culture.

Today Kiev is an important industrial, scientific, educational and cultural centre of Eastern Europe. It is home to many high-tech industries, higher education institutions and world-famous historical landmarks. The city has an extensive infrastructure and highly developed system of public transport, including the Kiev Metro.

The capital of Ukraine has got great cultural potential. There are more that 30 museums, about 200 unique architectural monuments, 33 theatres, enormouse quantity of constant active art exhibitions. Kiev is one of the greenest cities of the world, it has more that 60 parks. In spring and summer the city resembles one huge park.

There are many historical places in Kiev. For example, St Sophia Cathedral, which was built in the 11th century, Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra that was founded in the 11th century, St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, which was ruined and recently completely restored, St. Andrew’s chirch in baroque style?

The monument to Taras Shevchenko, the great Ukrainian poet, is in front of the University, named after him. The monument to Bohdan Khmelnitsky, famous hetman of Ukraine, stands in the square opposite to St Sophia Cathedral.

Kiev is the centre of cultural life of Ukraine. Fans of theatre, cinema, music, painting and other arts can find there many interesting for themselves. There are lots of museums in Kiev: the Museum of Ukrainian Arts, the Historic Museum, the Taras Shevchenko Museum, the Lesya Ukrainka Museum, the museum of M. Bulgakov and others.
