Flag Etiquette

The United States Flag Code outlines certain guidelines for the use, display, and disposal of the flag. For example, the flag should never be dipped to any person or thing, unless it is the ensign responding to a salute from a ship of a foreign nation. Thus in London, at the opening ceremony on the1908 Summer Olympics, where countries were asked to dip their flag to King Edward VII, the American flag bearer did not. The flag should never be allowed to touch the ground and, if flown at night, must be illuminated. If the edges become tattered through wear, the flag should be repaired or replaced. When a flag is so tattered that it can no longer serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. Significantly, the Flag Code prohibits using the flag "for any advertising purpose" and also states that the flag "should not be embroidered, printed, or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use". Both of these codes are generally ignored, almost always without comment. However the U.S. Flag Code does permit the use of flag design in fashion, provided that such a design was not formed using the actual design of the flag. The wearing of any article of clothing representing the flag is allowed, however, the flag itself is not.

The Coat of Arms and the Great Seal

The Coat of Arms of the USA

The Coat of Arms of the USA has a long history. It can be met on letterheads, license plates and seals of the United States Government and on the cover of the Passport of the United States The shield, has two main differences from the American flag. First, it has no stars, second, unlike the American flag, the outermost stripes are white, not red. The supporter of the shield is a bald eagle with its wings outstretched. It holds a bundle of 13 arrows in its left talon referring to the13original states, and an olive branch in its right talon, together symbolizing that the United States has "a strong desire for peace, but will always be ready for war.". Although not specified by law, the olive branch is usually depicted with 13 leaves and 13 olives, again representing the 13 original states. The eagle has its head turned towards the olive branch, said to symbolize a preference for peace. In its beak, the eagle clutches a scroll with the motto ("Out of Many, One"). Over its head there appears a "glory" with 13 mullets (stars) on a blue field.

Great Seal of the United States

The Great Seal of the United States is used to authenticate certain documents issued by theUnited Federal Government. The Great Seal was first used publicly in 1782. On the observe of the great seal is the national coat of arms of the United States. It is officially used on documents such as passports and various flags. As for the coat of arms, the design has official colours;while the physical Great Seal itself, as affixed to paper, ismonochrome.

Text15

The Anthem of the USA

"The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of theUnited States of America. The lyrics come from "Defence of Fort McHenry", a poem written in 1814 by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet,Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by theBritish Royal Navy ships in theWar 1812.The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written byJohn Stafford Smith for the men's social club in London. That song with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. Set to Key's poem and renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner", it would soon become a well-known American patriotic song. "The Star-Spangled Banner" was recognized for official use by the Navy in 1889, and by President Wilson in 1916. However, it was made the national anthem only on March 3, 1931. Before 1931, other songs served as the hymns of American officialdom. Thus, "Hail, Colombia" served this purpose at official functions for most of the 19th century." In God we trust" was adopted as the official motto of the USA in 1956 as an alternative or replacement to the old one, adopted when the Great Seal of the United States was created and adopted in 1782."In God we trust" has appeared on US coins since 1864 and on paper currency since 1957.
