Dear friend,

My name’s John. I’m a fifteen-year-old British boy. I live in Oxford in the UK. I live in the suburbs in a nice detached house with a big backyard. There’s a nice green lawn in front of it, full of flowers. It’s very pretty. Our neighborhood is nice and quiet.

My mum is a teacher and my dad is an engineer. My family is rather big. There are five of us. I have a sister and a brother. My sister is in primary (elementary) school. She’s 7. She likes singing and watching animated cartoons.

My brother goes to a municipal kindergarten. (play school, nursery school) He’s only 4. He likes playing with a ball.

I have a dog and my sister has a hamster. It’s cute!

I attend a private school near home. I’m in the 7^th grade. (I’m in year 7.) I like my school because it has a friendly, happy atmosphere. What I don’t like, is wearing a school uniform, but everybody has to.

We normally attend school 5 days a week. My school begins at 9 am and ends at about 2 pm.

I’m keen on studies. I think school is cool. I study algebra, geometry, science (physics, chemistry and biology), history, geography, handicraft and Chinese. Yes, now it’s a very popular language in the UK, although it’s very hard to learn! This semester we are working on our pronunciation. It’s fun!

My favorite subject is science because I’m fond of physics and chemistry. When I grow up, I want to be a scientist, so this year I’m taking a course in computers. I hate cramming for tests but I never copy from my neighbors and never cheat on tests.

Frankly speaking, I’m not very athletic and I don’t like physical education lessons but I like playing basketball with my friends. My favorite athlete is Mohamed Ali. I think he’s great! He’s a living legend!

The things I most like to do in my free time are to read, to go on trips, to walk the dog, to hang out with friends and to surf the net!

My favorite type of books are historical novels and fantasy. I guess my favorite type of music is rock. My favorite band is U2. It’s an old band but I like it anyway.

My favorite sport is basketball because it’s a team game and you meet many different people and make friends. You also learn to work together and help each other. Every year we compete against other schools in our area. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. It doesn’t really matter! I just love the game!

Sometimes I like watching football with dad and my little brother. We always drink a lot of Pepsi, eat potato chips and shout a lot to support our team. It’s fun! It’s a pity mum never joins us. On such days she usually goes shopping with my sister.

Sometimes I go to the movies with friends. I don’t like horror films but I enjoy watching thrillers and comedies. I like cartoons, too!

On Sundays we usually go out or have a special meal at home. My favorite foods are vegetables and cheese. You know, I’m a vegetarian. I don’t like killing animals for their skins or meat.

To feel happy I need my family and friends, my dog, my books and, of course, my computer!
