Reading Step1.
Teenagers are a special group of the population often criticized by the older generation. They are considered to be spoilt. They have too many things, too much pocket money and no responsibilities. Teenagers are blamed for being rude, disrespectful, for wearing strange clothes, listening to awful music, not paying attention to their studies.
But are they really such a big problem?
Officially a teenager is anyone aged from 13 to 19 but most people would think first of the younger group and exclude 18 and 19-year-olds. After all, once you’ve reached 18 you can vote, get married without your parents’ permission and join the army. On the other hand, children are growing up and developing more quickly and these days 11 and 12-year-olds would like to include themselves in the ‘teenager’ group.
In short, ‘teenagers’ are people who are in the stage of their life when they are developing from children into adults. And it’s not easy! Peer pressure, difficulties in studies, lack of understanding – all this can turn one’s life into a nightmare! Thousands of teenagers run away from home every year. Most of them come back within two-three days, but many are never found and become homeless victims of child abuse, or join the ranks of young criminals.
Very often the ‘older generation’ is deaf and blind to their children’s needs and problems. They believe they are always right, and the ‘younger generation’ is always wrong. They complain that teenagers are lazy, that they wear ridiculous clothes and are appallingly rude to their teachers and parents. What’s more, they spend all their time listening to awful music and watching unsuitable films and programs. And all they ever think about is parties, drugs, booze and sex. Is it anywhere near the truth?
Actually, it isn’t right. Most teenagers cope with their problems quite well. Teenagers spend a lot of time thinking about their studies and work, their families and friends, their future. Sure, there are certain preoccupations such as clothes, money and their bodies.
But isn’t it the same for most adults? So it’s just a myth that all teenagers are rude, selfish, lazy and greedy, the vast majority of them are polite, friendly, open-minded and hardworking.
Do teenagers have problems? Teenagers are human, so of course they have problems. And their problems are not different from anyone else’s.
It’s true, of course, that sometimes teenagers do have special problems. It’s a difficult time because it’s a period of transformation. It’s just as hard as a chrysalis changing into a butterfly. It’s difficult to grow up and the physical and emotional changes are often confusing and worrying. They can be really stressful.
What could parents do to help their children to go through this difficult period? Just love them, trust them, show more understanding, respect their privacy, stop criticizing their friends, tastes, clothes and music. They should try to become friends and remember, they used to be difficult teenagers themselves!

1. Teenagers are a special group of people aged from 13 to 18.

OK, drop me a line.
I’m staying with an English family in the suburbs of London in a nice semi-detached house with a garden. The family is not big. They have a son and a daughter. The daughter is married and lives in another city. The son is in college and comes home only at weekends.
Hi Ivan
I’m in London. I’m studying English here in a group from all over the world. We have classes on Mondays, on Tuesdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays and Thursdays we study half a day. Day off on Sunday. Back to school on Monday. I like our Saturdays. It’s a special day. We usually go sightseeing, we party and sing. It’s fun!
Pay attention to the attachment! It’s a photo of my first lesson.
I hope you’ll also be able to come to London some day. It’s a wonderful city!
Love Natasha
How are you? How are things?
So I get a lot of attention from my hosts and they take me out nearly every evening. We go to museums, theatres, restaurants and pubs. |
