  1. Management is the process of setting and achieving the goals of the organization through the functions of management: planning, organizing, directing (or leading), and controlling.

  2. The trait approach to understanding leadership assumes that certain physical, social, and personal characteristics are inherent in leaders. Sets of traits and characteristics were identified to assist in selecting the right people to become leaders.

  3. A manager is hired by the organization and is given formal authority to direct the activity of others in fulfilling organization goals. Without leading as well as managing, today's organizations face the threat of extinction .

  4. A traditional definition of leadership says that a leader influences more than one person toward a goal.

  5. Managers influence people in many ways. Sometimes their influence results from the position they occupy, and sometimes it results from their personality. Both types of influence are important and are needed to assist in the accomplishment of organizational goals.

  6. Leadership deals with change, inspiration, motivation, and influence. Management deals more with carrying out the organization's goals and maintaining equilibrium.

  7. Withholding of wages for violations of organizational rules and regulations represent the authority that goes with management positions, but if it represents social punishments, it is more accurately described as power.

  8. The assumptions of a leader are important, because what one believes to be true causes one to behave in a certain way. This behavior, in turn, causes others to behave exactly as one expected.

  9. The manager is responsible for what employees do or fail to do, as well as for the resources under their control. Thus, responsibility is an integral part of a manager’s authority.

  10. Some people associate leadership with superior position. They assume that when you are on top you are automatically a leader.

  11. If a leader assumes that followers are lazy, irresponsible and must be forced to work hard, it is likely that a system of incentives and rewards will be set up that guarantees followers will behave in precisely this manner. Precise rules and regulations will be developed, and managers will closely supervise workers to ensure that the work is not only completed but also accomplished in the precise manner that the leader desires.

  12. The leader causes the creation of the lifestyle of the organization.
