Introduction
Введение в профессиональный английский
1. Read the text and underline the words and phrases which could be the topics we will speak
about at our lessons.
Travel is as old as humanity but tourism as an industry appeared not long ago.
Tourism gives work to millions of people. There is a great number of occupations in tourism, such as tour guide, booking agent, tour operator, reservation clerk and many others. Mass tourism is not just movement of large number of people from one place to another. People need a lot of other goods, such as souvenirs, food, drink, cars and jets. They also need facilities in the form of hotels, health centres, restaurants. Finally, tourists need advertising. So some people think that tourism is the biggest industry in the world.
Tourists travel to places away from their home and stay there for a short time – a week or two. They travel because they want to do business, or to visit friends or relatives, or to see famous sights, or to have a holiday.
The tourist industry gives tourists everything they want and need – hotels, restaurants, steamships and airports, historical sites and attractions, theatres, etc. Tourists visit places of interest, cities and towns both in their country and in other countries. So there are two main branches in tourism – domestic and international tourism.
Tourism is a very important business for many countries, and it is becoming bigger every year. The most popular countries are Turkey, Egypt, France, Spain, the United States of America.
Nevertheless, tourism may have not only advantages but also disadvantages.
