The address should begin about halfway down the envelope and should be arranged something like this:
C. Ewart, Esq.,
The Pines,
Oxshott Road,
Canterbury,
Kent.
Messrs. Jackett & Lane Ltd.,
29, Park Ridge Road,
London, E.C.5.
Sir Charles Northwood,
Thackeray House,
Queensway,
London, W.2.
The Reina Linen Co. Ltd.,
Purley Way,
Knightstown,
Lancs.
1) Note the two forms of layout for an address.
2) Note that Messrs. is not used for impersonal firm-names. Messrs. stands for Messieurs (which is never written in full in English. Neither is Mister or Mistress; they are always, in addresses or greetings, abbreviated to Mr. and Mrs. If mistress is written in full it has a different meaning, e.g. Mrs. Priestley is a mistress of her house).
3) The following abbreviation are sometimes used: Rd. for Road; St. for Street; Av. for Avenue; Sq. for Square; Pl. for Place; Gdns. for Gardens; Pk. for Park; Terr. for Terrace; Cres. for Crescent; Ho. for House.
